South African mining minister Ngoako Ramatlhodi said on Tuesday he was concerned with the rate of job cuts at mining firms and would urgently discuss the matter with unions and the companies concerned.

“The cumulative retrenchments we have seen are a great worry for us as the regulator of the mining industry. We need bold leadership from all in the industry at this time, in order to decisively tackle this matter,” Ramatlhodi said in a statement.
