Miner Plants One Million Trees

Published Date: September 16, 2009

An Australian mining company has planted one million trees in a bid to clean up its former mine workings, writes Nick Gibson.

A special laboratory in Perth run by Alcoa is dedicated to growing indigenous Aussie trees and plants to replace those destroyed during mining operations. And this month it is celebrating having grown one million plants over the past 15 years.

The Australia Operations laboratory, a world-leader in plant replacement cultivation, has produced trees and plants that have been used to replace the natural growth in over 6,537 hectares of mine rehabilitation projects at Alcoa`s Huntly Mine near Dwellingup and its Willowdale Mine.
